Mechanical engineering is a science that involves applying the principles of physics in order to research, design, create, analyze and maintain various mechanical systems, tools and related devices. Individuals who hold a mechanical engineering degree can find jobs in a wide range of industry fields, including robotics, manufacturing, automotive, defense and aeronautics. An increasing number of mechanical engineering programs offer at least some of their courses in an online format.

Education and Training

Mechanical engineers usually need to have at least a bachelor`s degree to be hired for an entry-level job. Individuals interested in laboratory research or teaching need a masters or a doctorate degree to be competitive in today`s job market.

Because technology changes so quickly, mechanical engineers typically continue their education during the course of their careers. Continuing education online is becoming an increasingly popular option for engineers who wish to stay informed of relevant technological advances and trends in their field.

Benefits of Attending Online Courses

Online mechanical engineering courses are often more affordable than attending classes in a traditional setting. Not only are universities and colleges very expensive, but you`ll also have to spend money on transportation, gas and parking.

Attending online mechanical engineering courses also allow for more flexibility, which makes this a great choice for those of you with full-time jobs or families. You can plan your learning time around the rest of your busy schedule, whether that is in the evenings, in the wee hours of the morning or only on weekends.

You can attend online courses in the comfort of your own home. Lectures and reading materials are usually sent to you via email. You`ll read the materials to get ready for quizzes, exams, essays, projects or other assignments.

Mechanical Engineering Courses

While every online mechanical engineering program offers a unique curriculum, most of these programs place a strong emphasis on physics, advanced mathematics, drafting, materials science and statistics.

Depending on your field of interest, you might also enroll in courses focusing on robotics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics or other specialized areas of study. Advanced classes might concentrate on specialized topics such as elasticity, mechatronics, cyrogenics or biomechanics.

One of the more popular mechanical engineering courses is computer-aided engineering, or CAE. In this course, you will use various tools to build a variety of designs. For example, you`ll probably use computer-aided design, or CAD, to create 3D and 2D blueprints of products.

Robotics and mechatronics are also fun courses to take. The coursework will teach you how to integrate mechanical and electrical engineering into a system. This might be as simple as a DVD player or as complex as an actual working robot.

Tips

Make sure the online courses you choose are offered by a program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).

Find an internship or an apprenticeship to enhance your online learning with practical, real-world knowledge. An internship also helps you figure out your professional strengths and weaknesses.

Mechanical engineering is a great field to go into if you like working with various machines and their components. If you are interested in attending mechanical engineering courses but lack the time or a traditional campus nearby, check out the various engineering programs available online.

I have only taken one online course,  and although it was from a legitimate, accredited school, I learned less Calculus in it than in the first week of my traditional classes.
