Hi, i have just finished my school education and i gonna start my education as an undergraduate in mechanical engineering. My family members and cousins told me that it's quite often very helpful to learn some technical softwares or skills before going to an engineering college or university. Can you please guide me about what books should i study? Or what software can i learn which will help me in mechanical engineering a lot?

As i think it's good time for me to learn things, before i official start my mechanical engineering education. I will really appreciate help from other mechanical engineers.

- Thank you in advance!

Hey kid welcome on board! First of all i congratulate you for choosing mechanical engineering as your undergraduate course. Now that you are in and you have got some free time before you start your first semester, so i suggest you to learn the basics of physics. You should have strong hold in your physics if you really gonna succeed in mechanical engineering.

Reading and watching material for mechanical engineers:
Then you must read about materials and their properties. Specially modern materials. Read about cars. Learn how things work. Watch different documentaries on making of cars and other products. Maybe a series called "How it's made" can be very helpful to you being a freshman in mechanical engineering.

Useful best Software for mechanical engineers:
Talking about different softwares which you should learn, i will suggest you to learn autoCAD. THIS IS A VERY HELPFUL SOFTWARE FOR MECHANICAL ENGINEERS. You draw all your product designs in autoCAD. Then another very important software for mechanical engineers is "Pro/ENGINEER". This software is just awesome and my favorite. I will just say a very few words about it, which are "you think it and you design it". Yes Pro/ENGINEER wildfire is that awesome. If you learned these two softwares it will be quite an edge over other students. You will really enjoy learning these softwares.
Besides that you can also go for matlab, Ansys, verilog.

Additional learning:
Besides all this if you have interest in robotics, as mostly many young guys have. so you should also get some know how about them.

Good Luck and best wishes. Smile

As an undergrad, you will be taking lots of fundamental / introductory courses: math, physics, chemistry, natural sciences, history, and art, etc. Fundamental knowledge that you gain through those classes would be very valuable later on when you start taking advanced engineering courses. Also, those borders between different sub-fields of engineering have disappeared over the years. We can learn a lot from the nature and our surroundings (physical, chemical, biological, and geo/environmental sciences; e.g., nanotechnology, insect anatomy, environmental changes, etc.), how we live (psychology in product design, art, etc.)...

It would be of an advantage to you if you could keep your passion and imagination wild -- then whatever you learn will come to you very easily -- you can learn any computing languages and tools very quickly. Any knowledge of programming languages (perl, C, C++, Java, Visual Basic; or dynamically-typed languages: Matlab, Python, GNU Octave, SciLab, R, etc.) and CAD programs would become handy later on. Many of them are freely available online also. If you have particular questions about Matlab, you can join the Matlab forum on the MathWorks Inc. website, or join one of many forum sites online. For example, WWW Search with keywords "tips on matlab programming" and you will see many help / discussion sites.

Good Luck!

Well, Soha has explained everything to you in a much pretty manner. I suggest you the same mechanical engineering softwares. You can download tutorials of these softwares from many different websites or maybe you can join some diploma classes for these mechanical softwares.

Pro Engineer Wildfire is a really great mechanical engineering software. We design all our 3d Products in it. Not only you can design products in it but also it helps in many other engineering calculations. All type of mechanical products ranging from a simple gear to a car or jets and aircrafts can be designed in Pro Engineer.

Pro Engineer will help you in many projects in your college. You can participate in many international events like Shell ECO Marathon or Design, Build and Fly Contests (DBFC) etc. In Shell ECO marathon, students from all over the world design their eco friendly cars with a focus on low fuel consumption. In Design, Build ad Fly contests, students design their Radio Controlled aircrafts (RC aircrafts) and compete with each other.

So the key line is that, learning the mechanical engineering softwares like Pro E, auto CAD and Ansys etc will help you a lot in many ways in your Mechanical Engineering College days.

i am a mechanical engineer from Mumbai university and will be going to UK for masters in the same stream so i would recommend you all friends that for learning mechanical softwares always start from AUTO CAD then PRO-E...[if u don't wanna study further]
then go for CAE complete package of 6 softwares which include even autocad...[if u r planning to go abroad]

I want to ask a question about softwares,u tell all the softwares but what about Solidworks????or basic softwares like Gambit&Fluent?????I as a 2nd semester learned these 3 software in this summer??I did a useless job???

It is not compulsory that you should learn a perticular software or something. . it depends upon your field of interest. . part modelling will be learnt as part of acadamics in many universities. . i suggest you to start learning ANSYS complete package( including thermal and CFD).

To ripudaman,

If u r living in Pakistan then, there is only one institute that provide automotive eng. and the name of that institute is NEDUET. You go for it :)
