Are you a mechanical engineer and fed up of working 9-5 with the people whom you don’t even like to work with? Are you very fond of traveling and you cant afford this just because you are bound to work in your company office from 9am to 5 pm? Do you think you will die doing the same routine mechanical engineering job in your office? Yes you will, until you start doing freelancing as a mechanical engineer. I know you are shocked to hear this and you are like “what the hell are you talking about?”
Working as a freelance mechanical engineer? Yes you can get this freedom with a little hard work. As far as I know there are not as many freelancing jobs available for mechanical engineers. Still you can find some freelance mechanical jobs at different freelancing websites like oDesk . But remember, if you really want to earn big then it should not depend merely on these websites. Because they offer freelance mechanical jobs very rarely. Maybe 1 or 2 job postings a day.
So what you can do then? You can build your own website with your previous work portfolio. Like if you are working as freelance mechanical in the field of mechanical designing then you should put your sample CAD projects to your portfolio in your website. And you can receive orders for future projects directly on your website. If you are wondering how will you build a website then it’s a very simple job these days. You can find many easy website builders like www.webs.com and Google Sites etc. And for receiving your order payments directly on your website you can use Google Checkout system which is free of cost and secure as Google owns it.
But the question is how will you get your first customers on your website? And the solution is quite simple that you will make your links with employers and industries through many freelancing websites available. You will work as a freelance mechanical engineer on those websites and refer your employers to your website for any future projects. It will give them a more professional expression about you. Of course it will save them a heavy fee which he pays on other freelancing websites.
But to succeed as a freelance mechanical engineer you need to make sure that you deliver every project in high quality, fulfilling all the requirements and demands of your employer for long term relations. Any comments and critics are welcomed

Freelancing for mechanical engineers is quite helpful for many students and even professionals. I personally know many young graduates and students who are working full time as freelancers. They do different projects online which are related to mechanical engineering. In this way all the mechanical engineers can not only earn some money but it also adds a lot to experience of a mechanical engineering student. It will definitely give a cool impression in your CV and during your job interview as well. So all of you mechnaical engineers, start freelancing today! It helps in a long run
